MIND

What is a healthy mind? Is it one of a very intelligent being, or does that intelligent being need to have other qualities to qualify it as being healthy? If you were asked to define the word "mind", what would you say? Do you think of more than brain matter?

If you look in a typical thesaurus, as I did in mine, you are likely to see a long list of words that can be synonymous with the word mind. These words/phrases include: intellect, brain, consciousness, thought, mentality, intuition, perception, conception, intelligence, intellectuality, capacity, judgment, understanding, wisdom, genius, talent, reasoning, instinct, wit, mental or intellectual faculties, creativity, ingenuity, intellectual powers or process, gray matter, brain power, intellectual personality, and sometimes you will even find terms such as soul and spirit listed.

A dictionary's definition of mind is likely to mention terms such as: thought, memory, perception, emotion (love, hate, fear, joy, etc.), will and imagination.  You may also find the terms, stream of consciousness and process of reasoning.  This of course makes sense when you consider the fact that as humans we often have private conversations "inside our heads" which lead to us "making up our minds", "changing our minds" or on some occasions, being "of two minds" about something.

Taking all things into consideration, it seems that when discussing the "mind", matters that impact the health or fitness of the mind can be many and varied. Self-esteem and self-confidence must be essential components of a healthy mind. And if that is true, then in order to have and maintain a healthy mind one must consider issues that have an impact on his/her self-esteem and self-confidence. This can include relationships, career choices and daily activities. It could even be appearance and/or body image, or even something as seemingly minor as the individual's communication style.

Stress and anxiety can certainly play a role in an individual's feelings and emotions. Irregular sleep patterns or lack of sleep can also present problems.

It seems the list of possible offenders is endless, and it becomes increasing obvious that choosing and living a healthy lifestyle is vital to having a "healthy mind".
