Agoraphobia

Agoraphobia is a fear of open spaces, crowded places, and public places. Of course some sufferers manage their fears better than others and some – the extreme sufferers can even become virtual prisoners in their own homes.

But how does it all start? Most often agoraphobics attribute this disorder to the problems associated with panic attacks…in other words, the agoraphobia stemmed from the fact that the sufferer already had panic attacks.

Panic attacks can be described as an intense sense of doom or fear that seems to have no real justification. These feelings can include any or several of the following:
• nausea
• need to escape
• heart palpitations
• shortness of breath
• sense of smothering
• sense of choking
• chest pain
• dizziness or lightheadedness
• trembling
• sweating
• chills or heat flush
• fear of losing control
• fear of going crazy
• fear of dying
• tingling sensations

Obviously this is a very unpleasant experience and the sufferer would prefer not to be in certain situations during such a time. The problem is that panic attacks happen very suddenly – without warning. It is because of this unexpectedness that the sufferers sometimes decide that it is best to just stay in a safe place rather than risk the possible consequences of a panic attack away from home.

One in three people with panic attacks develop agoraphobia. This means they simply avoid leaving the home or a safe zone. Safe zones can mean different things to different people.

Agoraphobia is three times more common in women. There has been discussion related to that statistic – is it that high because women more openly discuss problems and needs – or could it be that more women have sought treatment – or does society accept women using avoidant coping mechanisms more readily than they do men? Another theory is that men will self-medicate with drugs and/or alcohol more often than women. Studies are in the works to find those answers!
